Early Life and Upbringing

Durk Derrick Banks, professionally known as Lil Durk, was born on October 19, 1992, in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. Raised in a challenging environment, his father was incarcerated when Durk was just seven months old, leaving his mother to care for him and his siblings. Facing financial hardships, Durk took on responsibilities early in life, often recalling times when there wasn't enough food at home. He began exploring music through social media platforms like Myspace and YouTube, gradually building an online fan base that encouraged him to pursue rap seriously .​

Musical Career and Achievements

Lil Durk's musical journey began with the release of his mixtape series Signed to the Streets (2013–2014), which garnered significant attention and led to a deal with Def Jam Recordings. His debut studio album, Remember My Name (2015), peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200, followed by Lil Durk 2X (2016). After parting ways with Def Jam in 2018, Durk signed with Alamo Records and released Just Cause Y'all Waited (2018). His subsequent albums, including The Voice (2020), 7220 (2022), and Almost Healed (2023), have solidified his status in the rap industry. Notably, his single "All My Life" featuring J. Cole peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards .​

Beyond his music, Lil Durk is a father to seven children and has been in a relationship with India Royale since 2017. He founded the collective and record label Only the Family (OTF), fostering talent from Chicago's rap scene. Committed to giving back to his community, Durk established the Neighborhood Heroes Foundation, aiming to provide resources and opportunities for youth in Chicago. In October 2024, Lil Durk was arrested on charges related to a murder-for-hire plot and is currently incarcerated at MDC Los Angeles. The case has drawn significant media attention, with ongoing legal proceedings .​
